Exploring the global influence of Afrobeat and Highlife.

DJ and founder of Run Dem Crew Charlie Dark joined us in Devon Turnbull’s Listening Room for a special listening session straight from his personal collection.

Titled Africa Centre Of The World (recognisable to Fela Kuti fans), the session explored Afrobeat and Highlife’s global influence by blending African rhythms with jazz and funk alongside a series of personal anecdotes from the DJ’s life.

From discovering Fela Kuti as a teenager to playing sets at Plastic People, Charlie Dark discusses the direct impact African music had on London’s scene and his own DJ sets over the years.

You can also listen to Haseeb Iqbal’s recent sessions on Blue Note RecordsPakistani cinema vinyl and Jah Shaka now.

The Vinyl Factory: Reverb runs until November 10 at 180 Studios. Book tickets online.
