VF Live: Symphonical Records

Featuring Black soul and funk artists from the ’60s-’80s.

In VF Live, artists take you inside their homes, record shops, and studios for intimate sets and mixes.

For Symphonical Records first instalment, the label unearths little known funk and soul gems by Black artists that were self-released during the sixties through the eighties.

“Predominantly, these are the B-sides to uptempo soul & funk tracks, forming the basis to a genre known as ‘oldies’ – coined by radio personality Art Leboe. These singles are on the rarer side, pressed in small quantities and distributed locally, generally recorded with limited resources – with one or two takes laid down by groups in their teens or early 20s. Their messages are sincere, and have also inspired a recent resurgence of international ‘sweet soul’ groups.

Symphonical Records & Publishing was created to highlight these independent groups and solo artists from the ’60s-’80s. We have recently launched a project called The Key To Our Love, which shares the sounds, stories & imagery of all the artists involved.”
