Sonic Youth frontwoman launches art takeover.

At this year’s Los Angeles Art Book Fair, Kim Gordon will present a pop-up record store in collaboration with Gagosian Gallery. Titled ‘Living on the Edge of Obscurity’, the project pays tribute to Massachusetts’ Feeding Tube Records, a shop and label known for fringe music.

The gallery booth will celebrate the shop’s “resistance to the status quo” with top-shelf items selected from Feeding Tube’s inventory and a dedicated listening booth.

A limited edition record by Body/Head (Gordon and Bill Nace) will also be released to mark the occasion, with 30 unique record sleeves by artists including Laura Owens, Jim Shaw and Rita Ackerman.

Continuing the vinyl theme at the Fair, items from Allen Ruppersberg’s conceptual project El Segundo Record Club will go on display at Marc Selwyn’s booth. Ruppersberg digitises obscure works from his 78s collection, then lathe cuts them onto original, unused blank acetate home recording discs and creates unique jackets for each individual record. These are then sold online through the club.

LA Art Book Fair opens tomorrow at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, 152 North Central Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90012. Details here.
