“Less rhythm, more tape.”

Dada-inspired industrial group Cabaret Voltaire have announced the release of their 1979 soundtrack, Chance Versus Causality, available 30th August via Mute.

Chance Versus Causality was recorded in 1979 as the soundtrack for director Babeth Mondini’s film of the same name. The record was largely improvised, akin to what the band describe as their “live ambient sets… with less rhythm, more tape.”

Cabaret Voltaire crafted its sounds at their Western Works studio, with no prior knowledge of the film, or input from the director.

Initially only one copy existed – a pair of tape reels sent over to Holland for inclusion in the film, which was given limited theatrical release and never actually seen by the band.

Frontman Richard H. Kirk, a pioneering force in British electronic music, has also teased a new Cabaret Voltaire album. Other than Kirk’s solo works, their last release as a group was an archival live recording back in 2013 – Archive #828285 Live.
