Hurricane
(Wall Of Sound, 2008)
I first heard Hurricane in its somewhat-embryonic form when I was 16 years old. It was my first time in a ‘proper’ recording session, and Grace Jones was trying to get the perfect take of the phrase ‘ripping up trees’ from the title track. It was all rather frightening, but later on she was more concerned with making sure I ate some fruit she had brought than anything else. Those moments sum her and this excellent album up well for me: otherworldly, larger-than-life, and scary; but equally vulnerable, reflective, and very human.
