  • Stand On The Word: 10 of the best choirs on record

    By | October 9, 2014

    Bjork_choir_cover

From the pulpits of the Mid West to the pits of the Welsh mines, there’s nothing more rousing than a good choir.

This week Capital Children’s Choir released their debut EP Untrust. Having enchanted close to three million viewers on YouTube, the precocious choir have teamed up with artist and producer Dinos Chapman who has produced artwork, a remix and now a video for the record, which features covers of Crystal Castles, Florence & The Machine and Spiritualized.

Naturally, to mark the release we thought we’d take a look at some of the greatest choirs ever to be committed to record. While we make no claims that this a comprehensive list, the ten records featured on the following pages are varied and brilliant in their own rights, taking in the huge breadth of genres that have benefitted from a little bit of choral support. Again, rather than pick records that employ choirs for the odd belting chorus (MJ’s ‘Man In the Mirror’ or Madonna’s ‘Like A Prayer’) we’ve gone for ones where the choir are either central or deeply significant to the record as a whole.

As ever you can listen to all ten tracks featured in these records in our playlist here or hear them individually as you read.

  • Dinos Chapman provides hand-coloured etching for signed limited edition of Capital Children’s Choir’s Untrust

    By | September 24, 2014

Capital Children’s Choir’s debut EP features a cappella covers of tracks by Crystal Castles, Florence & The Machine and Spiritualized.

An arch-provocateur as both visual artist and electronic music producer, Dinos Chapman has once again raised eyebrows with his latest collaboration, working with prodigious choral group Capital Children’s Choir to package and provide a remix for their first EP Untrust, which will see their hugely popular cover versions of tracks by Crystal Castles, Florence & The Machine and Spiritualized pressed to vinyl for the first time.

Previously only available on Youtube where the tracks are approaching three million views, Dinos Chapman has created both a regular and limited edition version of the release, the latter featuring an exclusive hand-coloured etching, five screen-printed artworks across the inner sleeves and two heavyweight clear vinyl records, all housed in a cloth-bound hard board sleeve.

Hand-signed and numbered by the artist himself, the limited edition Untrust is available to pre-order now ahead of its release on 6th October from The Vinyl Factory online shop.

The EP features covers of Crystal Castles ‘Untrust Us’, Florence + the Machine ‘Shake It Out’ and Spiritualized ‘So Long You Pretty Thing’, which you can hear now below. Scroll down for more images of the special edition.

  • Dinos Chapman collaborates with Capital Children’s Choir on new EP

  • Dinos Chapman collaborates with a children’s choir to release new EP feat. covers of Crystal Castles, Florence Welch and Spiritualized

    By | September 12, 2014

Capital Children’s Choir’s have their unique interpretations of Crystal Castles, Florence & The Machine and Spiritualized packaged and remixed by notorious artist and producer Dinos Chapman on their debut EP Untrust.

Capital Children’s Choir are without doubt the only kids choral outfit to have clocked close to three million views on Youtube. Filmed and recorded at Abbey Road Studios, these precocious youngsters have made a name for themselves with haunting a capella cover versions of ‘Untrust Us’ by Crystal Castles), ‘So Long You Pretty Thing’ by Spiritualized and ‘Shake It Out’ by Florence + the Machine that defy categorisation, being both angelic and unsettling in equal measure.

Now, with their trio of recordings set to be released on vinyl for the first time, The Vinyl Factory has added another ingredient into the mix, enlisting the equally defiant visual artist and producer Dinos Chapman to design the sleeve and contribute a warped and distinctly antithetical remix of the choir’s Crystal Castle’s cover. The irony of the nature of the collaboration is certainly not lost given The Chapman Brothers’ brushes with controversy in the past, with a children’s rights group recently branding their sculpture depicting two adolescent girls as “paedo-pornographic”.

Unleashed on ‘Untrust Us’ – the choir’s most successful recording to date with more than one million views alone – Chapman’s 12-minute remix magnifies the contrast between these most unlikely of collaborators, the choir having brushed shoulders with everyone from Pope Benedict to the Spice Girls in recent years.

Capital Children’s Choir – Untrust will be released by The Vinyl Factory on 6th October as double heavyweight vinyl and a limited edition of 100 copies featuring Dinos Chapman art print, bespoke screen printed cloth-bound card case with exclusive artwork, signed and numbered by the artist. Click here to pre-order the gatefold 12″ vinyl – more news on the limited edition soon.
