Celestial sax, Indian folk music and space-age electronics.
Last July, saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, producer Hieroglyphic Being and percussionist Sarathy Korwar boarded Lightship95, a studio inside a 550 tonne ship moored along the Thames in East London, to perform a completely improvised, live set.
What followed was a unique combination of Hutchings’ signature, otherworldly saxophone sounds, merging with funky, jazz-hued Indian rhythms, and industrial flourishes.
Over 2.5 hours of intergalactic music was recorded from the Association for Research & Enlightenment Project’s afternoon at sea, with only 90 minutes made public via a live stream on NTS.
Ahead of A.R.E. Project’s first public live show, on 17th August at London’s Jazz Cafe, Ninja Tune’s Technicolour imprint is releasing a new 12” EP featuring four edits from this Lightship95 session.
