Peckham continues its mission to become the centre of the known universe.

Just days after the launch party for Rye Wax comes news of another brand new record shop opening soon in SE15. Operated by Tom Lawes of local party promoters Wholemeal Music and DJ and collector Theo Kozlowski, YAM Records (short for You And Music) will specialise in vinyl with a small selection of cassettes, but due to space constraints will be “very selective” about its stock, featuring “mostly secondhand (funk, soul, boogie, jazz and beyond) and new releases from small, independent labels.”

Lawes adds: “We’ll also be stocking some choice cuts from the larger labels but want to focus on the little guys – a small shop for small labels!” There’s also merchandise available to buy already from the shop’s freshly launched Facebook page.

YAM Records will be located just up the road from Rye Wax, at Units 12-14 in K & S Indoor Market, 135A Rye Lane, SE15 4ST. The grand opening is planned for the August Bank Holiday weekend with a couple of parties in the run-up.

Meanwhile, crate diggers north of the river have just been treated to another exciting retail option with the opening last month of Love Vinyl, a “mecca for dance music lovers” located at 5 Pearson Street, Hoxton. Owners Stuart Patterson and Jake Holloway introduced their new venture to us by offering their own tips and advice on how to start a record shop in 2014.
