Poet, musician, and academic Anthony Joseph returns to the series with a jazz special playing – “jazz vibes, modal jazz, hard bop, post bop, jazz funk, and a touch of soul” – on the heels of the release of his album The Rich Are Only Defeated When Running For Their Lives.

“This is a very special jazz-focused mix celebrating the release of my new album, The Rich Are Only Defeated When Running For Their Lives. These are some of the sounds and moods that inspired the band and I as we composed, rehearsed and recorded the album. The emphasis here is on the feeling of jazz, the emotive swing pressure of the jazz, and the way it moves and improves the body.

We begin with Duke Ellington and travel through post-bop and avant swing via some deep, hypnotic organ combo vibes courtesy of Don Patterson, some rugged big band funk from Buddy Rich, and lots of swinging modal grooves.”
