Unsung 1983 soundtrack follows Blade Runner reissue earlier this year.

Soundtrack to the film Nankyoku Monogatari by Japanese director Koreyoshi Kurahara, Antarctica was the third in a trio of seminal scores by larger-than-life Greek composer Vangelis. Overshadowed by 1981’s Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner in 1982 (the soundtrack would not be released until 1994), Antarctica‘s infamy grew in exile. Restricted to Japan, export copies bumped the records’ value in Europe and America before Polydor stepped in to give it a worldwide release in 1988.

Less bombastic than its predecessors, Antarctica captures the grandeur and melancholy of Ushioda and Ochi’s ill-fated expedition to the icy continent, coloured by all of the layered synth refrains and yawning soundscapes that made Blade Runner one of the most sought-after scores of the modern era.

Vangelis’ Antarctica will be released on 7th October on 180gram vinyl by audiophile reissue label Music on Vinyl.
