Following a research trip to Jamaica exploring the country’s early folk music and rituals, McFarlane worked with producers Kwake Bass and Wu-Lu to electronically deconstruct and reimagine her findings.

Across the album’s 10-tracks, Songs of an Unknown Tongue explores themes of Black heritage and history, Black womanhood, and contemporary issues of empire, colonialism, race and identity.

Marking her fourth studio LP, em>Songs of an Unknown Tongue follows McFarlane’s 2017 album Arise, which was also released on Brownswood.
