Identity, race, and the importance of difference in Arthur Jafa’s work.

Artist and cinematographer Arthur Jafa has stolen the show at The Store X this year. His stirring and evocative portrait of contemporary black America Love Is The Message, The Message Is Death is housed on the roof of the brutalist building, and has been hailed as one of the most important works of art of the decade, blurring the lines between social, spiritual and personal experience.

In the latest instalment of SHOWstudio’s ‘In Your Face’ series, Jafa gives a candid and wide-reaching interview to Carrie Scott that touches on themes specific to the work, and more generally around identity, race and what it means to be an artist in contemporary America.

Watch the film above and head down to The Store X, 180 The Strand to see it in-situ alongside ‘Love Is The Message, The Message Is Death’ between 12pm and 7pm on 12th-13th December and from 12pm until 10pm on 14th December.
