Get lost in mutant Americana.

Youth Lagoon, aka Trevor Powers, will release his first album in eight years, Heaven Is A Junkyard, on June 9 via Fat Possum.

Powers paused his Youth Lagoon project in 2016 after releasing three albums, due to feeling like he’d lost himself. But, his home in Idaho helped him find personal transformation and led him to release two tapes, Mulberry Violence and Capricorn, under his own name.

The return to Youth Lagoon was sparked by a bad reaction to over-the-counter medication. His larynx and vocal cords were so severely damaged, Powers could only communicate through text messages and pen and paper, but he maintains this helped narrow his focus.

“Family, neighbors, and grim reapers. I’ve always written about far away things, but the best material has been right in front of me this whole time in Idaho,” he explains.

Check out the video for “Idaho Alien”, directed by Tyler T.Williams.

Speaking about the release, Powers said: “Heaven Is a Junkyard is about all of us. It’s stories of brothers leaving for war, drunk fathers learning to hug, mothers falling in love, neighbors stealing mail, cowboys doing drugs, friends skipping school, me crying in the bathtub, dogs catching rabbits, and children playing in tall grass.”

Heaven Is A Junkyard is available to pre-order on clear smoke or black vinyl now, ahead of its June 9 release.
