A new exhibition called Art and Vinyl — Artist Covers and Records at kunstmuseum basel is exploring the relationship between music and vinyl art over the past 50 years.

According to the museum, the exhibition investigates Rodney Graham’s question: “Am I a musician trapped in artist’s mind or artist trapped in a musician’s body?”

It “focuses on covers and objects in which the artistic image in the form of drawing, painting or photography is in the foreground. Due to the independent presence of the sculptures, the usual information on musical and artistic authorship fades into the background.”

Curated by René Pulfer, the exhibition encompasses nearly 150 works by artists such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Nam Jun Paik, alongside several The Vinyl Factory releases.

Featured VF records include: Christian Marclay’s Live At White Cube, Hito Steyerl’s Fatima Al Quadiri Nothing Forever LP, Maurizio Cattelan & Pierpaolo Ferrari’s Toiletpaper X Daft Punk 12″, Dan Graham’s cover for Rodney Graham Band’s ‘Don’t Trust Anyone Over Thirty’, Ugo Rondinone & John Giorno’s THANK 4 NOTHING, William Kentridge’s Second-Hand Reading, Theaster Gates’ Black Madonna, Pipilotti Rist’s 4th Floor To Mildness, and various Haroon Mirza o/o/o/o/ releases.

Art and Vinyl — Artist Covers and Records runs through 3rd February 2019 at kunstmuseum basel.
