12 Years A Slave director Steve McQueen is making an authorized Tupac documentary

The acclaimed director will be working closely with Tupac’s family.

12 Years A Slave director Steve McQueen is set to direct a full-length feature documentary about Tupac Shakur.

As Deadline reports, the film will be a collaboration between Amaru Entertainment, a company created by Tupac’s mother Afeni Shakur, and White Horse pictures. Gloria Cox, Tupac’s aunt, will act as executive producer, while other producers include Jayson Jackson of What Happened, Miss Simone? and Nigel Sinclair, who has worked on The Woman in Black.

Speaking about the project, McQueen said: “I attended NYU film school in 1993 and can remember the unfolding hip-hop world and mine overlapping with Tupac’s through a mutual friend in a small way.”

“Few, if any shined brighter than Tupac Shakur. I look forward to working closely with his family to tell the unvarnished story of this talented man,” he added. No release date for the film has been confirmed as yet.

Next month will also see the release of long-awaited Tupac biopic All Eyez on Me. Directed by Benny Bloom and featuring Demetrius Shipp Jr. as Tupac and Jamal Woolard as The Notorious B.I.G., other characters include Tupac’s late mother and Puff Daddy.
