Following last year’s backlash, Record Store Day returns with BBC backup.
It might be the biggest fixture on the record-buying calendar but it’s also an event fraught with controversy. Last year, small labels, vinyl manufacturers, even a few record shops, attacked Record Store Day for overbooking pressing plants with inane major label releases.
Whether the backlash will continue this year is yet to be seen but with BBC Music today announced as official UK partners, Record Store Day is here to stay. Its ninth annual event, celebrating “independent record shops and the vinyl format”, will take place on Saturday 16 April.
Of the collaboration, BBC Music Editor James Stirling said: “BBC Music is always keen to support moments that unite people through their love of music. Record Store Day does exactly that and we are very happy to be officially involved this year.”
Special RSD programming will take place across the BBC radio networks. In the run up to the event, Steve Lamacq will speak record shops around the UK on BBC Radio 6. Meanwhile Lauren Laverne’s show will be broadcasting live from a record shop on Friday 15 April.
BBC Radio 6 Music will also announce the “very exclusive” Record Store Day product list.
