A beloved figure of 1970s jazz.

Jazz saxophonist Arthur Blythe has died, WBGO reports. He was 76.

Sometimes going by Black Arthur Blythe, he was known for bridging styles in post-bop and avant-garde jazz, as well as his distinct vibrato. His first album was 1977’s The Grip, the start of a long discography that ended with 2003’s Exhale.

WBGO’s extensive obituary covers the many great artists Blythe played with including Gil Evans, McCoy Tyner, Steve Reid, Bill Frissell, Mose Allison.

Revisit some of Blythe’s work below.
