From Russian chickens and tractor recordings, to dub, drum’n’bass, punk, and beyond.

A new documentary about DJ MarcelleA Journey Through the Sound of DJ Marcelle / Another Nice Mess – has been released as part of Amsterdam Dance Event’s 2020 online edition.

“The essential element of what I do is that I play today’s music. Of course I have a lot of old records, and some of them I really like, but I think art should say something of the present,” shares Marcelle.

The film sees DJ Marcelle diving into her immense and eclectic collection, which spans everything avant-garde records including the sound of tractors and Russian chickens, to dubstep, dub, punk, and beyond.

Alongside showcasing her collection, the Dutch producer and DJ also explains why she works with three turntables, doesn’t rehearse sets, and the problem with artists who pander to their audience.

“I always work with three turntables when I’m performing live. I compose live by placing sounds on top of each other, so I always have a few records with different sounds with me.”

Finally, reflecting on her diverse and storied career, she explains: “Marcelle stands for freedom and she does what she wants.”
