Mixing carnival rhythms with John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk-esque roots.

Brazilian pianist Amaro Freitas is releasing a new album called Rasif, this October via Far Out Recordings.

Hailing from the country’s north east coast, Freitas started learning the instrument at the age of 12, in a church band lead by his father, before earning a place at the Conservatório Pernambucano de Música as a teenager.

A follow-up to his 2016 debut Sangue Negro, Rasif was composed and produced entirely by Freitas and described by Far Out as “a love letter to his native northeast.”

“I want to show the simplicity of music, to break the stigma that the piano is for a particular social class,” he explains.

“Yes, it’s a difficult instrument, which many people do not have access to, but with it you can express everything.”

Recorded at Carranca Studio in Recife, its six tracks feature Hugo Medeiros on drums, Jean Elton on double bass, and Henrique Albino on baritone saxophone, flutes and clarinet.

Pre-order a copy of the album here ahead of its 19th October release, listen to first single ‘Mantra’ and check out the track list below.
