Imagine SWV singing over an A$AP Rocky beat.

In 2015 Atlanta singer ABRA released her debut LP on Awful Records, the lone female (at the time) and self-described “Darkwave Duchess,” in the testosterone-fuelled hip-hop party crew. It’s a 12-track album that sounds a lot like a Nintendo video game intro had one too many sips of Purple Drank, in a good way.

Like an early-days Jessie Ware, back when she was collaborating with Sampha and SBTRKT, ABRA is at her best when singing over tracks that you’d expect to hear a rapper on.

The Rose release, out on double-vinyl via Ninja Tune and pressed at The Vinyl Factory, is a reminder that there’s something kinda special about ABRA, beyond ‘just’ making catchy R&B songs.
