A new start-up is pressing ‘mixtapes’ to vinyl every month




The vinyl subscription market grows.

Having raised $18,000 in less than a month, far surpassing its Kickstarter goal, Vinyl Moon is the latest vinyl subscription service on the market. The service aims to combine creator Brandon Bogajewicz’s four favourite things: vinyl, art, mixtapes and the mailman.

Described as an “immersive music experience”, each monthly volume of Vinyl Moon includes a curated mix of 10 songs by new musicians and a postcard for each song featuring artist information and artwork. The music policy is pretty broad – everything from indie to electronic is fair game, although metal and classical appear to be outlawed.

Record sleeves for Vinyl Moon are designed by visual artists and each copy is pressed to limited edition coloured vinyl. Available for $25 per edition, the first volume has already sold out but with financial backing now in place, future editions are in the pipeline.

Vinyl Moon is the latest vinyl membership club seeking to cash in on growing vinyl demand. Since 2013, Vinyl, Me Please has offered members a 12″ record, a ‘matching’ cocktail recipe and an art print. There’s VNYL which markets itself as the “Netflix for vinyl records”, although the idea of renting records has invited copyright concerns and other problems (read about that here). Then there’s Turntable Kitchen which combines recipes and 7″s. That Special Record cuts the gimmicks and just sends you one LP and one EP each month. And of course, Jack White has his fingers in the pie: his Third Man Vault is a “rarity-excavating” quarterly subscription service.
