A powerful ode to Harlem jazz photographer Roy DeCarava.

Kahlil Joseph has released Black Mary, a companion to his Store x The Vinyl Factory-commissioned Shadow Play exhibition at NYC’s New Museum.

Black Mary debuted as part of a special video installation during the final week of Soul of A Nation at the Tate Modern.

The six-minute film is inspired by Roy DeCarava – a Harlem photographer featured in Soul of A Nation whose work explored jazz’s influence on African-Americans – and also includes Alice Smith’s scorching rendition of ‘I Put A Spell On You’.

Shadow Play and Black Mary follow Joseph’s recent collaborations with Beyoncé on Lemonade, Sampha on Process and Kendrick Lamar on m.A.A.d, the latter of which stole the show at last year’s Infinite Mix.

Click here for more information about how to visit Kahlil Joseph’s Shadow Play, which is open at New Museum until 7th January 2018.
