The Vinyl Factory has released a limited edition boxset from Carsten Nicolai.

Comprising the records featured in Nicolai’s interactive installation, currently showing at The Vinyl Factory: Reverb exhibition at 180 Studios, bausatz-noto (Boxed Edition) features 12 10” individually coloured vinyl records, each featuring 20 unique locked grooves.

Previously released as a sold-out signed edition with a hardback book and an additional hole on each record, this new 2024 edition is a more streamlined, affordable option for fans of Nicolai’s experimental work.

In Nicolai’s installation, four Technics SL-1210 turntables are integrated into a table. On each of these turntables lies a specially produced vinyl record with endless grooves, each of which provides the visitor with the opportunity to play several sound loops endlessly.

The table functions as an instrument allowing the viewer to layer and superimpose the sound loops and to create perpetually new combinations. Headphones on the table invite the visitor to attentively follow the emergence of the sound surface.

Carsten Nicolai’s practice investigates the boundaries between visual and audio art forms within an integrated artistic approach. Influenced by scientific reference systems, Nicolai often engages mathematical patterns such as grids and codes, as well as error, randomisation and self-organising structures.

Under the pseudonym noto, Nicolai experiments with sound to create his own semiotic language, and acoustic and visual symbols.

bausatz-noto (Boxed Edition) also features 12 custom-made archive folders and a 16-page booklet with exclusive installation photography. The boxset is housed in a silk-covered handmade box with debossed artwork.

Limited to 1000 copies worldwide, bausatz-noto (Boxed Edition) is available to order now. Copies will also be available to purchase at The Vinyl Factory: Reverb exhibition at 180 Studios.
