Following Sister Ray’s excellent picks last week, today we’re joined by Laurence from Soul Brother Records for a characteristically soulful, groove-laden selection of picks.

Cynthia Sheeler

I’ll Cry Over You

(JB’s Records)

A superb rare mid ’70s soul 45′ that appeals to both the 2-step and modern soul scenes and has been in demand for many years. An original copy would set you back approximately £400- £500.

Stairsteps

2nd Resurrection

(BMG)

A great album from Keni Burke and his family group, The Stairsteps, initially recorded for George Harrison’s Dark Horse label in 1976. It includes many great tracks, including the lovely Latino soul cut “Pasado”, later recorded by The Pockets. The first vinyl reissue of a classic album.

Tony Troutman

What’s The Use

(Jerri Records)

A very rare and excellent Modern Soul dancer from 1977. Original copies of “What’s The Use” now sell for around £800 so, for most, this is the only realistic chance to buy an official copy of this great record.

Fantastic Aleems & Leroy Burgess

Get Down Friday Night

(Nia)

Superb early ’80s boogie tune from the Aleem Brothers featuring the incredible voice of Leroy Burgess and an irresistible groove which is sure to set any dancefloor alight.

Karin Jones

Under The Influence Of Love

(Tidal Waves Music)

The first official reissue of Karin Jones’ only album from 1982, which includes the 2-step classic “Ready Ready Love”, and some boogie tunes. Original copies sell for £300, if you can find one!

You can find Soul Brother Records at 1 Keswick Rd, London, SW15 2HL. Find out more about their Record Store Day collection here.
