The roots of Lovers Rock explained.
“When it got to the ’70s, you suddenly had the first generation of Caribbean British kids who were born in England and felt English, but all they heard was this quite angry political music, and they felt like they just wanted a sound that they could just get down to and have a little bit of fun with.
That’s essentially how Lovers Rock was born. It was a response to the heavy political music that was often dominated by men, and it was the first moment when a sub-genre of reggae was spearheaded by women”.
Haseeb Iqbal explores the development of Lovers Rock through artists including Della Humphrey, Louisa Mark and Brown Sugar in Devon Turnbull’s Listening Room at 180 Studios.
