The life and career of Jah Shaka.

Recorded in Devon Turnbull’s Listening Room at The Vinyl Factory: Reverb exhibition, the third of Haseeb Iqbal’s summer listening sessions looks at the life and career of Jah Shaka.

Also known as the Zulu Warrior, Jah Shaka, who sadly passed away last year, is a legendary figure in reggae and dub culture. Born in Jamaica and based in London, Shaka operated one of the UK’s most iconic sound systems and produced records for the likes of Bim Sherman, Johnny Clarke and the Twinkle Brothers during a career that spanned over five decades.

Listen below to find out more about the trailblazing producer, artist and sound system operator, through the words and vinyl collection of Iqbal.

Hear Iqbal’s other sessions so far – a history of Blue Note Records and a Pakistani cinema vinyl special – now.

The Vinyl Factory: Reverb runs until 28 September 2024  at 180 Studios. Book tickets online
