As part of our mega vinyl survey last year, we asked hundreds of people the question: “If money were no object, what one record would you buy?”
We’re posing tough questions here at The Vinyl Factory. Last time we presented the record collector’s nightmare – “your house is burning down, you can only save one record: what would it be?”
Our next question is something of a collector’s wet dream but that doesn’t make it any easier. We’ve cherry-picked from the pool of responses to reveal an incredible selection of coveted, expensive, rare, bizarre, unusual, banned and even fictional records.
"Duran Duran Story - an odd Japanese pressing. Last I saw it went for $1000 on eBay."
"Rammellzee & K-Rob - Beat Bop, test pressing with original artwork by Jean Michel Basquiat."
"The Zombies - Oddysey & Oracle on CBS. I always thought I had it, but can't find it now."
"Once Upon a Time in Shaolin by Wu-Tang. It's literally a museum piece."
"Caustic Window - Caustic Window LP"
"One of the early Vault Packages from Third Man Records."
"The Cure - Club America, a 10" test acetate made at Abbey Road Studios."
"I'd love an original pressing of the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds."
"The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute. 1st pressing."
"An original Sun Ra hand painted sleeve"
"Christian Marclay - Record Without A Cover"
"The Voyager Golden Record. Or Burial/Massive Attack - Four Walls"
"Tubular Bells (mint original pressing)"
"Original pressing of: A Piper At The Gates of Dawn"
"Nelson Angelo E Joyce's self-titled album"
"New Romantic. A Japanese promo pressing featuring Duran Duran and Kraftwerk"
"Bill Evans Trio - Waltz For Debby from 1961"
"A first pressing of Dexter Gordon - Doin' Alright (Blue Note)"
"Probably the first Joy Division 7", just after the name change from Warsaw (original pressing)"
"An original pressing of Sun Ra's Sleeping Beauty"
"The limited edition version of Aphex Twin - Syro"
"Beatles' Yesterday And Today album because of the banned cover."
"Right now? The St. Vincent limited Golden Triangle released with her most recent record."
"The Honey Ltd.'s Come Down; I was played this single at a record store in Köln once and wasn't able to purchase it at the time. It's not super expensive, I guess, but it's a tougher one to track down."
"Beckie Bell's In Need Of... for the track 'Music Madness'"
A rare The Brian Jonestown Massacre EP - it's the only one I don't own of their entire vinyl catalogue. It's titled Not If You Were The Last Dandy On Earth!"
"Difficult question. Maybe the Captain Murphy release?"
"Ben Frost & Richard Mosse - The Enclave"
I'd buy the Autobahn vinyl that Maude Lebowski plays in The Big Lebowski and listen to it drinking a White Russian.
"An original pressing of Mike Oldfield's The Songs of Distant Earth"
"UNKLE – First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. Because it has always been one of my favourite songs, so delicate, so beautiful and I was lucky enough to hear this version live at the recently UNKLE gig at the Southbank. Sadly I didn’t realise they were selling it on the night and it’s a MASSIVE, MASSIVE regret as it’s an awesome version of one of my favourite records. I just can’t justify paying silly money to blaggers on Discogs!"
"An original Robert Johnson 78 on Vocalion, don't mind which one."
"Levon Vincent's Invinsible Bitchslap"
"Coil - Astral Disaster"
"As a collector I would buy The Quarrymen's That'll Be The Day / In Spite Of All The Danger"
"The Quarrymen shellac release currently owned by Paul McCartney"
