The Vinyl Factory explores the DJs, performers, and options for vinyl enthusiasts at this year’s festivals.

Heading to the inaugural RALLY festival in Southwark Park, London this weekend and hoping to pick up some records in between acts? Well, you’re in luck. Experimental venue IKLECTIK is set to host a record stall to cater to the crowd’s crate-digging needs. The Lambeth, London-based venue, founded in 2014, is bringing together a stall and mixed library packed with experimental and avant-garde sounds for festival-goers.

As part of our A Vinyl Lover’s Guide series, we caught up with IKLECTIK to find out more about the stall and to get a preview of the essential finds they’ll have on the day.

Tell us a bit about the records you’ve selected, and why you’ve highlighted them.

The selected records represent our curatorial programme, showcasing a variety of experimental music genres and pioneers. The nine titles were chosen because they are highly representative of the venue’s musical offerings and include musicians who have played, admire and will perform at IKLECTIK. This selection aims to introduce newcomers to the venue’s ethos and provide insight into experimental music, spanning noise, field recordings, modular synth, and abstract electronic music.

How did you get involved with RALLY?

We got involved through Tim Palmer, the co-founder of Bird on the Wire and organiser of RALLY. Tim approached us to partner in this new venture, given our shared interest in supporting groundbreaking music and the local community. Being based in Waterloo, South London, it was a fitting collaboration to be part of a festival that promotes innovative ways of experiencing music and fosters community engagement, aligning with the venue’s work since its establishment in 2014.

What can customers expect at the stall?

The record and book stall hopes to attract a diverse range of customers, including avant-garde, improvised, and exploratory electronic music fans, as well as those curious to expand their musical horizons. By catering to a broad audience, we aim to make experimental music more accessible and appealing to all kinds of music enthusiasts.

Customers visiting can expect a curated selection of vinyl records, tapes, and books on various experimental music genres, including electronica, music concrete, and digital culture theory. We’ll have products from both local and international labels and publishers, such as Astral Industries, Touch, Chinabot, Urbanomic, and more. This diverse range of offerings ensures there is something for every taste and interest.

How does running the stall at RALLY fit your work at the venue?

We’ve been selling books and vinyl at the venue for a long time. Additionally, since 2021, we have organised an annual sound and book fair called IKLECTIKA. The record stall at RALLY provides another platform to support labels and their dedicated work, reinforcing the arts community and furthering our commitment to promoting experimental music and culture.

What acts are you excited to see at RALLY?

The team is particularly excited to catch performances from Lorraine James, Kelly Lee Owens, Space Afrika, and PVA. However, we are also eager to experience other artists we might not be familiar with. We’re really looking forward to it!
