Torn Hawk

Let’s Cry And Do Push Ups At The Same Time

(Mexican Summer)

Listen / Buy

Mexican Summer follow up Andras Fox’s Balearic house masterpiece with a full length from America’s pre-eminent genre mangling multi-instrumentalist Torn Hawk. The producer and video artist emerged from the shadows with a series of hard hitting techno manipulations on L.I.E.S. and No Pain In Pop but has since departed from the tough stuff into a new sonic world of his own making. Over a hazy backdrop of queasy synths, molten samples and circular drum tracks, Wyatt apes the emotive guitar sounds of kosmische druids, new wave pin-ups and lo-fi heroes, forming a shimmering sound at home on the boundaries of genre divides.

black myth chant zobne

Black Zone Myth Chant

Straight Cassette

(Laitdbac Records)

Listen / Buy

Black Zone Myth Chant is an alias of High Wolf, the French guitarist and producer of kosmic, psych, new age and drone. As Black Zone MC, he does ultra-slow experimental sort-of hip hop, calling up Ras G, DJ Screw and Dean Blunt with twisted spoken word and grinding loops, channeling a dark mysticism that comes across as kind of crazed and scary in an altogether wonderful way. It was originally released on cassette in 2011, and includes a befittingly hissy metallic fuzz to (perhaps) compensate on this long-awaited vinyl release.

stateless

Dirty Beaches

Stateless

(Zoo Music)

Listen / Buy

Alex Zhang Hungtai aka Dirty Beaches is back on Zoo Music with possibly his most beautiful album yet. Stateless has no beat. Over its four generous and warm tracks Alex turns out one of the most stunning ambient / electronic / drone records this year (delete as applicable), soundtracking his endless touring and his never ending search for a home. A truly beautiful record.

Emerald Web

Whispered Visions

(Finders Keepers)

Listen / Buy

Emerald Web’s brand of Space Music was one that took synthesizers, the ubiquitous tool of the genre, and blended them with flute and a sense of wide-eyed wonder and exploration into the cosmos. Planetarium performances and soundtracking Carl Sagan documentaries included, the husband and wife team sought to enchant with their explorations in texture and harmony. This is the first time on vinyl for Whispered Visions, originally a 1980 cassette release and it’s as good of an introduction to their work as any other. If you balk at the term New Age this might be a bridge too far, but for fans of artists like Vangelis or Iasos, or if you like your ambience decidedly blissed-out, this is a very worth listen.

Cold Waves of Color

(Color Tapes)

Listen / Buy

Some weeks coming, this invaluable collection of British post-punk rarities from the Color Tapes archive finally lands in a limited edition of just 500 copies. One for aficionados of the genre and those newcomers willing to be taken to the era’s darker more obscure corners first, Cold Waves Of Color captures a riot of underground creativity that barely bubbled to the surface, probably never reaching more than the one hundred or so owners of the original tapes. Comps like this don’t come along too often, and we can see Cold Waves becoming a rarity in its own right.
