The history of cassette culture explored in new crowd-funded documentary.

The latest analogue format to get its own biopic, Cassette follows in the footsteps of the plentiful if somewhat samey vinyl documentaries of recent months, to celebrate the enduring appeal of the neglected but never completely discarded sound carrier.

Infinitely more likable than its ostentatious upstart sibling the CD, the charming but rather shy younger brother to mummy’s favourite the vinyl record has managed to hold its own in the shadow of the latter’s well-documented revival. Now, following a 2011 Kickstarter campaign by Zack Taylor and Seth Smoot, the cassette is getting its moment in the sun. Featuring contributions from the reliably entertaining Henry Rollins, Daniel Johnston, Mike Watt and Ian MacKaye among others, the analogue love-in reflects on just what the cassette meant for a generation of budding archivists and bedroom DJs, and what it continues to do for those lucky enough to have held onto their Walkmen.
