Digging in the Crates is an interactive installation produced by creative technologist Roland Lösslein. Using visualized data projected onto a set of turntables, musical info-graphics explore sampling as a mode of production in modern music.

Developer Lösslein has created an interface that navigates between 150 samples taken from 50 old records, which when projected onto turntables allow visitors to explore the origins and mechanics of beat sampling.

The installation, explained further in this video, also gives visitors the opportunity to turn their hands to music production themselves, cutting suitable samples from old funk, soul and jazz records as well as get into the history of sampling “and other musicological phenomena such as remixes, mashups or covers”.
