Toiletpaper, the provocative magazine of Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan and photographer Pierpaolo Ferrari release 14-track compilation I Always Remember A Face, Especially When I’ve Sat On It on a limited edition picture disc with The Vinyl Factory.

He’s been called a provocateur, a prankster and an irreverent, often controversial purveyor of images. With a canon of work that reads like a contemporary absurdist fantasy, Cattelan has extended his playful streak with sidekick Pierpaolo Ferrari under the moniker of Toiletpaper on what is their first ever LP I Always Remember A Face, Especially When I’ve Sat On It, released by The Vinyl Factory on the occasion of Cattelan’s show at Fondation Beyeler in Basel.

The result is an oddball and highly original compilation that brings new relevance to the term “curation” in art and music. The organised chaos is defined by juxtapositions like that of Judy Garland’s “Trolley Song” from the 1944 musical “Meet Me In St. Louis” with an except from Coldcut’s 1988 house classic “Stop Ths Crazy Thing”, with each side creating a frenzied and eccentric cultural patchwork that plays like an untuned radio and betrays something of the manic over-saturation of contemporary culture. Both sensational and wry, the product is defined as much by the artwork and packaging, which, presented in a clear PVC sleeve, was conceived by Cattelan in line with his and Ferrari’s fantastical magazine Toilet Paper.

Limited to a thousand copies, I Always Remember A Face, Especially When I’ve Sat On It joins the artist’s hyper-real waxwork of Pope John Paul II pinned to the floor by a meteorite, his kneeling, mini-Hitler fawning for redemption and the caricatured reincarnations of his own face and body in the grand pantheon of Cattelan’s impish, often equine repertoire. His first foray into the world of music does not disappoint.
