Detroit DJ, producer and Sound Signature label head Theo Parrish will hold a production workshop in aid of Gilles Peterson’s Steve Reid Foundation, in which he will create a track from a Twitter-sourced sample palette.

Set up by Gilles Peterson following the death of friend and jazz drummer Steve Reid in order to “help musicians in crisis and to support emerging talent”, the Steve Reid Foundation will be hosting a unique event on May 7th in East London called “Experience Of Creation”.

“Examining the production process from start to finish” Parrish will be creating a track from a selection of Twitter-sourced recommendations, and a quick browse of the #SRF hastag suggest he will be working with Sly Dunbar’s “River Niger”, Jingo’s Afro-rock bouncer “Fever” and Steve Reid’s own “Long Time Black” among others.

Parrish had this to say about the forthcoming event:

“People will have the rare opportunity to witness a process that is usually private and personal. We’ll be ‘sonic strip teasing’ from needle drop to a full-blown idea. Creating will take place in real time and people will be able to interact with me in a space of learning and creativity.”

A trustee of the Foundation alongside the likes of Floating Points, Koreless and Kieran Hebden (who worked with Steve before his death), Parrish will be joined by NTS Radio and CDR’s Tony Nwachukwu on the night, with all money raised going to the charity. The event has been limited to an exclusive (and sadly sold out) 50 guests and the deadline for Twitter suggestions closed yesterday.
