On sale in June.

The biggest turntable news from CES 2017? Technics is releasing the new SL-1200GR, an abbreviated and hopefully cheaper version of last year’s contentious SL-1200G model. The good news is that the deck will be cheaper, the bad is that it’s still probably out of reach for most in the mass market.

According to Gizmodo, the Technics SL-1200GR will go on sale in June for $2300 CAD, which they anticipate will equate to a $2000 retail tag in the States. That’s half the price of the SL-1200G.

If that figure is correct, UK customers can expect to pay between £1400 and £1500 compared to £2799 when the SL-1200G was launched. Though as What Hi-Fi notes, “second-guessing US to UK prices can often end in tears.”

With GR billed as the “standard” model, it’s clear that Technics is taking aim at the audiophile market not the DJ market with its new range of 1200s, something that creative director Hiro Morishita confirmed in a recent interview with The New York Times.
