Street Songs: Tuxedo's top 10 funk records

Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One share their all-time favourite funk records.

If you were going to get anyone recommend you ten funk records then you probably wouldn’t look much further than Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One. The blue-eyed soul boy behind one of the best modern soul records of the last decade A Strange Arrangement and record collector nonpareil, Mayer Hawthorne has now teamed up with hip hop producer Jake One, who’s worked with everyone from De La Soul to G Unit, to return to Stones Throw as Tuxedo, the bumpin’, slick-as-you-like modern funk outfit whose self-titled debut dropped straight out of the P-Funk mothership earlier this month.

Channeling everyone from Chic to Shalamar and Zapp, it’s not surprising that these names figure strongly in this list, with Roger Troutman, Rick James and George Clinton rubbing shoulders with lesser known jazz-funk innovators like Bernard Wright.
